About Meteors Youth Wrestling:
Meteors Youth Wrestling is a youth wrestling club located in the Montrose Area School District but not funded by the school district. The club was founded by Wade Robinson in 2009 when he saw a need for the club at Choconut Valley Elementary School and the lack of participation at the varsity level. Shawn Aukema and Todd Geertgens joined the program’s coaching staff in its infancy and have been instrumental in its growth and success. After its second season, Meteors Youth Wrestling became the only youth wrestling club for MASD. The 2018-2019 season will be our 10th!
We average 15 wrestlers per season. Wrestlers range from grades 2-6 and are from Choconut & Lathrop Street Elementary Schools. Practices are held at both Choconut Valley Elementary School and Montrose High School from December thru March. Our team wrestles in at least one dual meet match with a neighboring school near the end of the season.
Many of our wrestlers can be found competing at individual tournaments around Northeast Pennsylvania and Southern Tier New York throughout the season. Our goals have been to teach the fundamentals of the sport of wrestling, instill the love of wrestling and teach good sportsmanship. We have done this while also being successful on the mat including five Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) State Qualifiers (Dylan Geertgens, Joseph Hester, Mikyle Fabrizio, Logan McNamara and Larissa Taylor) and a PJW State Medalist (Dylan Geertgens) to go along with numerous individual tournament champions and a 2nd Place at the 2016 Wyalusing Elementary Tournament, our first team trophy. We believe the lessons learned through wrestling are valuable throughout one’s entire life which is summed up in our “Success With Honor” motto.
The club ran as a free club for wrestlers in its’ first four seasons. In the Fall of 2013, the decision was made to join the CVYAA in order to not only be covered for insurance but also to be able to do necessary fund raising as a tax exempt organization. Through generous donations and a Quilt Raffle the club purchased a reconditioned mat from Resilite for $3700 . In 2015-2016, the club purchased 25 new sublimated wrestling singlets for $1,223.75 as well as a mat cleaning system for $180. Registration has remained a nominal $15 for the entire season which also includes a t-shirt. The club has been proud to remain financially independent through funds raised with apparel sales and recent donations from the Montrose Wrestling Booster Club.
